Lutfuzzaman Babar's 8-year sentence was canceled in the High Court

On Wednesday (October 23), Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollar delivered the verdict in a single High Court bench. Advocate Mohammad Shishir heard on behalf of Babar in the court.

Earlier, on October 12, 2021, the court sentenced former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar to eight years in prison in a corruption case. Judge of Dhaka Special Judge Court-7. Shahidul Islam's court gave this order. Babur later appealed against this verdict.

On May 28, 2007, Babar was arrested by the coalition forces during the previous caretaker government. On January 13, 2008, a case was registered against him at Ramna police station for acquiring illegal wealth and concealing wealth information. The case was filed by the Assistant Director of Integrated District Office Chittagong-1 Mirza Zahidul Alam. After the investigation, on July 16 of that year, Deputy Assistant Director Rupak Kumar Saha submitted the charge sheet to the court.

In the charge sheet, Babar is accused of having illegal assets worth 7 crore 5 lakh 91 thousand 896 rupees. He submitted an asset account of Rs 6 crore 77 lakh 31 thousand 312 to ACC. Among his illegal assets, two FDRs of Prime Bank and HSBC Bank mention the concealment of Tk 6 crore 79 lakh 49 thousand 218 and Tk 26 lakh 42 thousand 678 for house construction. On August 12 of the same year, the court ordered the trial to be started by framing charges against the accused.
