Exceptional Asteroid Venu. Made of carbon. Floating in space. Scientists first discovered it in 1999. 'Benu' is named after an ancient Egyptian bird. The asteroid is pitch black. When light falls on it, only 4 percent is reflected. It has been classified as a potentially hazardous cosmic object.
Venus Asteroid
There are different shapes of asteroids in space. From small rocks to large dwarf planets. These asteroids sometimes fly by the Earth. Venu asteroid also has that possibility? Asteroids may hit Earth in the late 22nd century. It's a fear. But only apprehension.
There is a one in 1,750 chance of hitting Earth. Meanwhile, scientists have also invented ways to escape from asteroids. If an asteroid is likely to hit the Earth, a spacecraft can be sent to change the trajectory of the asteroid. The Double Asteroid Reduction Test or DART was successfully tested in 2022.
Although there are many more such asteroids in space, this one has attracted scientists. Why? Because, it contains many expensive elements. Bringing the asteroid safely to Earth would reduce the scarcity of many elements. NASA's Osiris-Rex spacecraft has already collected samples from the asteroid.
After a seven-year mission, the spacecraft returned with 250 grams of rock and dust from the Venus asteroid. Water and carbon were found in that sample. Further analysis of this sample may explain how the earth was created, where the water came from. Maybe more will be known. All in all, the asteroid has great potential.
However, if an asteroid really hits the earth, it can be a disaster. About 66 million years ago, a terrible asteroid hit the earth. Of course, there were no people then. Dinosaurs ruled the world. Then a huge asteroid with a diameter of about 10 to 25 kilometers crashed into the earth, destroying those animals in a swarm. Along with the dinosaurs, many other animals perished in that disaster. But Benu is unlikely to become a symbol of such destruction in the end. Why, I already said that.
