Jumbangla Desk: NAM Bhavan (MP Hostel) located on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital is the allotted residence for members of the National Parliament. Members of parliament from elected and reserved constituencies used to live in NAM Bhavan with their families. Till last August 5, the scene at NAM Bhavan was different. Each flat in the 6 buildings was allotted in the name of the parliament members. Their family lived there.
In the afternoon children could be seen playing under the building. There was movement of local people and political leaders. Army and police personnel are now camped in buildings 1 and 3 of NAM Bhawan . The remaining four buildings are vacant. Details from Human Land Report-
The receptionist of Nam Bhavan. Gholam Rabbani said that a member of Parliament got allotted and took his family to a flat in building number 1 of NAM Bhawan on August 4. But after a day they had to leave the flat. After August 5, all but two buildings remain vacant. Army and police personnel are housed in two buildings No. 1 and 3.
By noon on 5th August, all the family members and relatives of the parliamentarians left the NAM building and went wherever they could. They left their belongings behind. A person working in the reception department of buildings 4, 5, 6 of NAM Bhaban said that most of the members of Parliament were in the area of NAM Bhaban as the Parliament was not in session. But their family was in NAM building. However, MPs from reserved seats were in NAM building.
Some of these parliamentarians went to the cantonment on the morning of August 4th and again on the morning of August 5th after seeing the situation. The members of parliament who were there saw the bad situation and left NAM Bhavan leaving everything. The student mob entered the NAM building and vandalized it. We, who were employees then, wanted to set fire and requested them with folded hands that these are government property not to destroy them. Then they left.
After that, a letter was sent from the parliament secretariat to take the personal belongings of the members of parliament. But none of the MPs themselves or their wives or children came to collect the goods. Relatives or nominated representatives of these MPs come and take their belongings. There are still belongings of some MPs in the flats of Nam Bhavan.
