International Desk: The historic Rabindra Setu or Howrah Bridge, built over the Hooghly River in Howrah district at a cost of 22 lakh rupees, is still standing tall. This bridge connects the city of Kolkata. But you will be surprised to know that this bridge is closed for a few minutes during noon and 12 midnight. But the reason is really surprising.
Howrah Bridge
Howrah Bridge is a suspension bridge and is one of the longest bridges in the world. It stands on two huge pillars. The over 280-foot-tall pier is anchored to the river bed with two massive concrete blocks. The distance between these two pillars is 1500 feet. So if there is too much weight on it, it may break.
In fact, when the Howrah Bridge was built during the British period, the engineers thought that the two pillars on either side could not carry more than 25,000 tons. And according to intellectuals, the time for any bridge to collapse is 12 o'clock. But they didn't mention whether it was 12 noon or 12 midnight.
And according to that, all the vehicles were stopped for 3-4 minutes between noon and 12 midnight. However, there is no scientific explanation for this data. The bridge is regularly maintained but in spite of this the structure of the bridge has started to corrode. The bridge is getting damaged due to human drinking and animal excreta.
65 lakhs is spent on its maintenance every year. But no one knows how long this bridge will bear the load of people. Meanwhile, some people say that the Howrah Bridge will not collapse in any way, closing this 12 o'clock hour is a trick, because the bridge can remain in peace for some time without the weight of people.
