In the hadith narrated by the famous Companion Hazrat Obada Ibn Samet (R.A.), the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, When someone wakes up at night and recites this supplication,
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَشَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ سُبْحَانَ الَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَاَ إِ لَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ (Pronounced: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la-sharika lahu, lahul mulk wa lahul hamdu) )
Meaning: There is no god but Allah, He alone, He has no partners, His is the kingdom, and His is all praise, He is powerful over all things. Almighty Allah, there is no power to avoid sin and do good deeds except by Allah's help.
If he recites this prayer and says, O my Lord! Excuse me! He was forgiven. (The narrator Walid said, or he said,) Any supplication is accepted. If he then gets up and performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted. (Abu Dawud)
When you wake up at night, spend it on good deeds. Praying at night is a very meritorious act. The virtues of this practice have been described in various verses of the Qur'an and many hadiths. In the Holy Qur'an describing the good characteristics of believers, Allah Almighty says,
And the worshipers of the Most High, the righteous, and those who spoke to them, the ignorant, said peace to their Lord Reverence and resurrection
Meaning: And the servants of the Most Gracious are those who walk humbly in the land and when ignorant people address them (in indecent language), they say, Salam; And they spent the night prostrating and standing before their Lord. (Surah Furqan 63-64)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "In the last third of every night, Allah Almighty descends in the sky of the world and says, 'Whoever calls me, I will answer his call.'" I will give it to anyone who asks me for something. Whoever asks for forgiveness from me, I will forgive him. (Bukhari)
