Jumbangla Desk: In addition to bureaucratic complications, at least 300 cars worth hundreds of crores of rupees have been completely destroyed due to the long delay in the auction. These cars, imported 10 to 12 years ago, are unfit for movement and are now lying in open sheds at the port. Cars have no option but to sell them as scrap at kg rate. Details from the report of Time News-

The F shed of Chittagong port looks like a car dumping station from a distance. Before the modern car shed was ready, a part of imported cars used to be kept here. 297 cars that have not been exempted for a long time are still there. Many of the cars have become unfit for movement as they have been lying under the open sky for years.

Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Farooq said, 'There are 383 vehicles, which we have handed over to customs by paper. They are awaiting auction. Among them, 297 cars are in very fragile condition. They are very old. There is also a 2002 car here.'

According to information from Chittagong Port, currently there are 900 cars in multi-storied car shed, auction car shed and F shed of the port. Out of this, 383 cars have been handed over to Chittagong Custom House for auction sale. Last week, imported Land Cruisers in the name of 24 former MPs were handed over.

General Secretary of Custom Bidders Association Yakub Chowdhury said, "If the customs authority tries, it is possible to sell these cars only if they bring CP from the Ministry of Commerce or NBR."

Mohammad Rafiq, a member of the Custom Bidders Association, said, 'The authorities only say there are cases, there are cases. But the one who takes it will release the cars after settling the case.'

These cars worth hundreds of crores of rupees are now going to be declared as scrap. The customer claims that these cars are being destroyed due to legal obligations.

Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Custom House Mohammad Saidul Islam said, 'We have to keep the cars like this until the case is settled. If there is an ongoing case of any product in the name of car only, it should be settled. Recently we destroyed 74 cars as scrap, they are in auction process . As a result, if there is a case, we cannot go to auction or destroy any product.'

The importer gets the opportunity to keep the imported vehicle duty-free for up to four days in the shed at the port. Thereafter the toll is levied for every four days. And after 30 days, the Chittagong Port Authority handed over the buy paper to the customs for auction sale.

Hundreds of imported cars are wasted due to bureaucratic complications as well as rigor in auctions. However, millions of US dollars have gone abroad long ago due to the import price of these cars.
