The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been in power since independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. The last president was Mokhesi Masisi. 54-year-old lawyer Duma Boko is going to be the new president of the country. He is the candidate of the opposition alliance Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).
In an audio clip Masisi posted on social media, he said, "From tomorrow I will start the process of handover". Through this he is indicating a smooth transfer of power
He told the winning candidate, 'You can count on me if you need any guidance. …we will stand together as a loyal opposition'.
Chief Justice Terence Ranowane officially declared Boko the victor on Friday afternoon.
'I am honored and privileged to announce Duma Boko as the President-elect of Botswana. I congratulate you deeply for the confidence shown in you by the people'.
Parliamentary elections were held in Botswana this week. According to the latest results released on Friday on state television, the results of 55 out of 61 constituencies have been declared. Out of these, UDC got majority by winning 32 seats. And BDP is in the last position after winning only four seats.
Analysts say, BDP could not attract young voters during its long rule. They had been ruling the country in the same manner for 58 years. Could not present the innovation before the nation.
Meanwhile, Duma Boko has been sworn in as the newly elected president in the office of the Chief Justice. In his first speech he showed humility for the judgment of the people.
Duma Boko said, 'I pledge with every fiber of my being, I will do my best, not to fail, not to disappoint. I will always fulfill the duties assigned to the people of this republic. It is their government'.
Earlier, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson Osupile Maroba told AFP news agency that the UDC had secured the necessary seats to form the next government.
