Former US President Bill Clinton said that Israel is being forced to kill civilians in Gaza because of the Palestinian group Hamas. In addition, he has come under severe criticism from the Muslim and Arab American communities in the United States by commenting that 'the Israelis were in this holy land (in the Middle East) before the Palestinians.'
Clinton spoke at a campaign rally in Michigan on Wednesday in support of Vice President Kamala Harris. He said the Middle East issue is complicated in Michigan. Young Palestinians and Arab Americans here are concerned about the massive civilian casualties in the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
Explaining the matter at the time, he said, Hamas wanted to kill Israelis and make Israel uninhabitable. In Gaza they are protected by civilians, using them as shields. As a result, Israeli forces are forced to kill civilians while attacking Hamas.
Noting that Jews predated the Palestinians in the region, Clinton added, that is why Israelis refer to the occupied West Bank by names like Judea and Samaria.
Clinton's remarks drew fierce criticism online. The Arab and Muslim community interpreted his speech as racist, genocidal, white supremacist and ultimately rejecting the plight of Palestinians. Journalist Gida Fakhri said in the context of his statement that he did not see the real sorrow of humanity and the anger of people. He is forcing a false narrative on everyone. He showed his audience that he was not really for them, but that he was there and speaking for someone else's approval.
"The Democratic Party is actually involved in the same racism, injustice, violence and oppression as the Republican Party," wrote one person on social media. But they express it in a slightly more elegant way than the Republicans.
Another journalist, Mehdi Hasan, also questioned the decision of the Democratic Party to send Clinton to Michigan at this time. He said that while Israel is carrying out massacres on innocent women and children of Palestine, he appeared to speak in front of the Muslims by referring to it as 'Hamas's fault'. His statement will contribute to the defeat of the Democratic Party in Michigan right now.
Dearborn, Michigan Mayor Abdullah Hammoud criticized the approach of Democratic leaders, writing on social media, "Stop sending representatives who have no respect or respect for the community here." Because by doing this you are only doing more damage to the team.
Election polls in Michigan, home to America's largest Arab and Muslim communities, show two main rivals, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, tied. Winning this state is crucial for any candidate to win the presidential election.
More than 43,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since the start of Israel's offensive in Gaza. The United Nations has accused the Israeli military of the attack as a 'crime against humanity'. However, the US continues to provide them with all-out support.
