M. Humayun Kabir: Since Donald Trump won the US election, Bangladeshis may face some problems in going to that country. Because before the election, Trump announced that he would take action on these issues. As a result, if he follows through on his promises as president, we could be in trouble with immigration first. In particular, 'undocumented' people in the US may be at risk.
If President Trump wants to deport them (from the United States), many of our immigrants may be in trouble. This fear remains with us. But since Bangladesh is also involved in many changes, there may be some advantages and disadvantages. Another area of concern is international humanitarianism or cooperation.
If he (Trump) reduces this cooperation, it will become a new cause for concern. Apart from this, the relationship that the United States has with Bangladesh will be maintained in other matters. Because whoever is elected or comes to office in the United States, there is no change in their behavior with Bangladesh. They prioritize stability in Bangladesh, continued economic progress and democratic process.
As a result, I think, even if Trump comes to power, their process will be maintained. They will also continue to support the efforts of the present (interim) government (of Bangladesh). We expect the support of the United States as a friendly country. I don't think there's a chance that Kamala Harris is there, or Trump comes, that there's going to be a big change in our political landscape. Bangladesh is a self-reliant country.
On the other hand, the United States is an institutionalized country. Decisions there come through institutional processes, not individuals. These gaps remain in our understanding. Apart from this, our political system and social conditions have also changed in the last few months. As a result, our internal affairs will play an important role in how to move forward.
However, it can be assumed that if Trump comes to power, India will get some priority in South Asia. The current relationship between the US and India will improve somewhat. Because on a personal level, Trump has a good relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. US considers India as a friend or partner. India is of special importance in the context of its strategic rivalry with China.
