Plant respiration takes place at night. Photosynthesis takes place during the day. Plants make their own carbohydrate food by taking carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil and sunlight.

Plants convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. Next comes respiration. Under respiration, plants convert food carbohydrates into energy. Carbon dioxide and water are released during this time.

As the process of photosynthesis in plants takes place during the day, respiration takes place at night. That is, the carbon dioxide released from the plant's body at night mixes with the air.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air in the presence of sunlight during the day. At that time also the respiration of the plant is going on. But plants release more oxygen into the air in the presence of sunlight. More carbon dioxide is released at night.


Therefore, many people refrain from approaching trees at night. It is warned that exposure to excess carbon dioxide may cause respiratory distress.

But the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air in separate processes through the leaves, roots, trunk of the plant. Plant leaves have tiny pores called stomata. The pores of the stem are called lenticels. Again, the roots in the soil absorb air from the voids in the soil particles.

It is possible to find evidence of this respiration in plants. For this take small plants or fresh flowers or fresh leaves. You will need leaves or flowers plucked from fresh trees, not fallen leaves or flowers.

Take water in a glass container and let the leaves or florets float to the top. But some part should be submerged under water. After an hour observe the upper part of the floating leaf. You will see bubbles formed on leaves or flower petals.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are lighter than water. As a result, oxygen and carbon dioxide released from leaves or flowers are temporarily trapped due to being immersed in water. If you lift the leaf or flower, the bubble will disappear. Bubbles are created in a similar way when a person exhales while diving.
