India considers Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country in the face of the student uprising, as the former prime minister of Bangladesh. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this in response to a question at the weekly briefing of the Ministry on Thursday.

Randhir Jaiswal said, we have already said from here that she (Sheikh Hasina) is a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. So this is our position on this matter.

Awami League issued a statement congratulating Donald Trump after his victory in the US presidential election on Tuesday. In that statement, Sheikh Hasina was referred to as the 'Prime Minister of Bangladesh'. Bringing up this topic, a journalist asked whether India is considering Sheikh Hasina as a former prime minister or as an exiled prime minister. In response, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted the position of the Indian government.

On August 5, Sheikh Hasina left the Ganabhaban and left for India in the face of the mass uprising of the students. Since then he is in New Delhi. However, the Indian government has not informed about the status in which he has been kept.
