Jugantar representative Abdur Rahim was attacked by terrorists while taking pictures of illegal Balumhal in Sonagazi, Feni. Witnesses said the attackers were illegal sand miners and Union BNP and Juba Dal leaders.
The incident took place at Badamtali area of the upazila around 5 pm on Thursday.
It is known that sand miners are extracting sand illegally in Amirabad section of Sonagazi in Muhuri river. Based on such news, Yugantar representative Abdur Rahim went to the spot and took pictures and videos.
At one stage, 8/10 terrorists, including the Sand Excavator Amirabad Union BNP leader Mofizul Haque, KM Fakhruddin Farooq, Jubo Dal leaders Suman and Zafar Rubel, went to the spot and snatched Rahim's mobile phone and beat him up. At this time, trying to save Abdur Rahim, the businessman of Badamtali market. Idris Swapan was injured.
Locals rescued him and admitted him to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex.
Condemning the incident, the leaders of Feni Press Club, Feni Journalists Union and Sonagazi Press Club demanded quick arrest of those involved.
Sonagazi upazila health officer Dr. Uppal Das Das, journalist Rahim has cut and swollen injuries in 8 places on his hand, chest and back. He was shifted to Feni General Hospital with first aid.
OC of Sonagazi Model Police Station. Kamruzzaman said that he went to see journalist Rahim under treatment and the police was sent to the spot. Those involved will be arrested if written complaint is received.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamrul Hasan said that there is currently no valid Balumhal in Amirabad. Action must be taken against anyone illegally extracting sand.
