A court of Chittagong has issued an arrest warrant against former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation and central leader of Jatiya Party Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury.

On Thursday (November 7), Chittagong Financial Debt Judge Mujahidur Rahman's court ordered the issuance of this warrant due to non-payment of Tk 10 crore of defaulted loans.
The matter was confirmed by the bench assistant of the court, Rezaul Karim.
According to the documents of the case, Chittagong Agrabad branch of SBSC Bank PLC, the debt court issued the decree on March 27, 2024. 9 crore 34 lakh 45 thousand 229 rupees with interest at the rate of 12 percent was decreed against the borrowers. Although they were ordered to pay the decreed sum within 60 days, but they did not pay it, on July 8 of this year, they issued this case demanding recovery of 10 crore 78 lakh 40 thousand 66 taka. There was no immovable property as mortgage or collateral security against the loan taken. Therefore, it was not possible to take up the auction process as per the provisions of Section 33 of the Act for adjustment of liabilities. The Decretor Bank along with an affidavit applied for the issuance of arrest warrant against the borrowers under Sections 34 and 35 of the Finance Act. Although almost 2 years have passed since the filing of this case, as the debtors have not paid any dues of the decreer, a civil restraining order of 5 months has been issued to compel the recovery of a huge amount of defaulted debt.
