Speaking to dozens of White House aides in the Rose Garden on Thursday, Biden said he accepted that Trump had defeated his vice president, Kamala Harris. He made the comments after Trump was elected to a second four-year term in the White House after a one-term break.

"The will of the people always wins," Biden said. As I have said many times, you only love the country when you win, it doesn't. And you love your neighbor only if you agree - not even that.'

"We've lost this fight," Biden said. Failure is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable. We're getting along, but we have to stay busy. We have to move on. And above all we have to keep the faith.'

Trump, meanwhile, is moving quickly to consider appointments for key positions in his new White House administration and could announce some favorites within days.


He gathered at Mar-a-Lago, his seaside resort in Florida, to discuss his options with associates.

Before the election, transition chiefs Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon met with some potential candidates for top positions in the White House or to head cabinet-level departments and other agencies.

Trump may name world's richest Tesla CEO Elon Musk. He is a staunch Trump supporter and campaign donor. He may be appointed by Trump to find new government inefficiencies and reduce overspending.

Several Wall Street financiers are under consideration for the top economic post. Trump aides say some Republican senators could be tapped to head cabinet-level offices.
