Mohammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations, was elected as a member of the prestigious International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) in a hotly contested election held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The election was held on Friday (November 8) local time.
Three candidates from Bangladesh, China and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) contested to be elected in the two vacant seats earmarked for the Asia-Pacific region. Among them, the candidates of Bangladesh and China won the election.
After being elected, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Muhith said, "This victory of Bangladesh is a recognition of the trust and faith of the United Nations member states in Bangladesh 2.0 under the competent leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and the active role and contribution of Bangladesh in the United Nations." The International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) is an independent commission of experts established by the United Nations General Assembly consisting of fifteen (15) members. The commission makes decisions and recommendations on various issues such as human resource management, compensation, staff availability, etc. of the United Nations.
A professional diplomat, Ambassador Muhith joined the United Nations in July 2022 as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh. He currently serves as the Chair of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) of the UN General Assembly as well as the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS for the year 2024. Ambassador Muhith also served as Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022, Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2023, President of the Executive Board of UN-Women in 2022 and Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS in 2023. .
