The United States has urged Qatari authorities to order the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas to leave its headquarters in Doha. The move is seen as mounting international pressure on Qatar to take a stronger stance against Hamas. Hamas is a 'terrorist organization' in the eyes of the US and other Western allies.
The Times of Israel reported this in a report on Saturday (November 9).
Two weeks ago, senior Biden administration officials called on key ally Qatar to limit Hamas activities within its borders. Hamas has long used the office in Doha to conduct political and logistical operations. Qatar has a long-standing relationship with Hamas in establishing peace in Gaza. The full impact of the move remains to be seen, as Qatar's relationship with Hamas has been a sensitive issue in regional politics for years.
It remains to be seen how Qatar will respond to the US administration's call to oust Hamas. The US seeks to isolate Hamas internationally, essentially by closing down Hamas' headquarters in Doha. At the same time, it reflects the efforts of the United States to curb the influence of Hamas in the Middle East.
A US official told The Times of Israel, 'Five other prisoners were executed along with American-Israeli hostage Hersh Goldberg-Pollin in late August. And Hamas has subsequently rejected repeated cease-fire proposals. Ultimately, the United States was forced to change its view of the Hamas administration in Doha. US considers Hamas operations in Doha 'no longer viable or acceptable'.
Another Biden administration official said, "Hamas leaders should no longer be welcomed in the capital of any American ally, having rejected repeated offers to release hostages."
Hamas has shown no signs of backing down from its 'unrealistic position' in ceasefire talks, the US official said. has made conditions that effectively ensure Hamas remains in power in Gaza. And something that the US and Israel will never accept.
The U.S. official also said that details about when the expulsion of Hamas officials will actually take place and where they will be ordered to go are still being worked out.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has called on Qatar to freeze Hamas bank accounts and seize the assets of Hamas officials.
