The amount of money that the chief minister of a state in India will receive as salary and allowances is decided by the assembly of the respective state. Apart from salary, Chief Ministers get various allowances including 'sumptuary allowance' (for guests), free accommodation, travel allowance. Similarly, India's West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also supposed to get the same salary and allowances. He is entitled to that salary and allowances.
However, the West Bengal Chief Minister himself has claimed that he does not take a single penny from the state government's exchequer for salary or allowances. When the allowances of West Bengal ministers and MLAs were hiked in September last year, the chief minister's salary was not hiked.
At that time, Mamata said that she does not take any salary as Chief Minister. The royalty money he gets for owning his book is enough for him.
At that time the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Biman Banerjee said, 'Everyone's salary is being increased. But the chief minister's salary was not increased. We all know you don't get paid. That is your greatness. But the salary revision is necessary for the future. Let the government increase your salary thinking about the future. Otherwise, things don't look good. I also request to increase your allowance.
However, the Chief Minister did not respond to that request. In that situation, the salary of West Bengal Chief Minister was last increased in 2019. That is still the salary of the Chief Minister of West Bengal. As fixed in 2019, the Chief Minister's basic allowance is Rs 27,001. And for dearness allowance (Dearness Allowance or DA) the Chief Minister will get Rs 90,000. In total, his monthly salary is Rs 1,17,001 per month.
There, the Chief Ministers of several Indian states get much more money than Mamata's fixed salary.
According to multiple reports, the Chief Minister of Telangana gets a monthly salary of Rs 4.1 lakh. Delhi Chief Minister gets Rs 3.9 lakh. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's monthly salary is more than 3.5 lakh rupees, according to several reports.
