They were arrested from Ekta Bazar (Cow Bazar) area of Baraitli Union of Upazila in the early hours of Friday (November 8). Later, they were handed over to the Harbang outpost police along with the fish.
The arrested are - Abul Kalam (28), son of Nazim Uddin, son of Nazim Uddin, son of Nurul Kabir of the same area. Arman (22) and son of Akhtar Hossain of East Nunachari area of Ward No. 2 of Harbang Union. Mizan (30).
According to the local fishermen, Baraghona, Ramchari, Razailabil, Baighaghona, Vilijar Para, Maulvi Para, Himchhari, Dargapara, Alamnagar, Buri Shop and Baraitli road head area of Baraghona, Ramchari, Rajailabil, Baighaghona, Himchhari, Dargapara, Alamnagar, Baraitli road head area have been doing freshwater fishing in at least half a hundred ponds. According to the fishermen, a powerful fish thief syndicate was formed with Arman, Kalam, Jishu, Forkan, Taiyab, Tarek and Arif Gong under the leadership of Mohammad Ehsan, son of Hafez Kamal Uddin of East Khairatipara area of Baraitli Union. The members of this fish thieves syndicate, formed under the umbrella of a local Awami League leader, took the fishers hostage from the pond every night at gunpoint. The members of the thief syndicate regularly threatened to kill the guards while looting the fish. As a result, these guards did not dare to open their mouths in fear of their lives.
Ramim Hasan Manik, the owner of the fish enclosure, said that members of the thief syndicate have looted fish worth at least 20 lakh rupees from our pond in the last 15 years. As a result, there is an outstanding debt of lakhs of fish food. As a result, their fisheries are now on the verge of closure.
