Time was not going too well for five-time world champions Brazil. Although there was a glimpse of returning to the rhythm of winning two matches in the October window, Darival Shishis stumbled this time against Venezuela.
Brazil
The Seleção could not maintain the lead, despite giving hope early on. They still had chances to take the lead, but injured returnee Vinicius Jr. missed the spot kick.
Brazil drew 1-1 in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match at Maturin, Venezuela on Thursday. Telasco Segovia equalized after Rafinha's superb free-kick put Brazil ahead.
Brazil was aggressive from the start of the match. But could not get the finish though. Selecao could have gone ahead in the ninth minute. Vinny failed to take a shot in a one-on-one position after entering the box with the ball. Passed to Rafinia in the face of the goalkeeper's obstacle. He blasted the ball over the bar.
Miss Brazil scored an easy goal in the 22nd minute. This time too the unfortunate Vinny. The winger, who scored a hat-trick in the last match for Real Madrid, melted his feet from the penalty area after receiving a teammate's pass in the box. The ball eluded the goalkeeper but rebounded off the bar. After a few seconds, Gerson's strong shot from outside the box was saved by Venezuelan goalkeeper Rafael Romo.
Ederson's wrong pass, Seleção almost conceded a goal. Although Darival's disciples survived that journey. Brazil finally saw the face of success in the 43rd minute of the last minute of the first half. Rafiniera's curling shot from just outside the D-box made no mistake. The opponent's goalkeeper did not reach even after jumping.
Brazil's joy at the lead did not last long. After the break, the hosts returned to the field. Telasco Segovia came forward after receiving Savarino's pass in the box and took a bullet speed shot. Ederson was defeated by speed when he returned the shot. But Vinny disappointed Brazil the most. In the 59th minute, the Venezuelan goalkeeper blocked the ball on the left side and jumped into the box. The referee gave a penalty after catching a foul in the VR check. But the Real Madrid winger failed to take the spot kick. He got another chance though. But the return ball also failed to net.
Desperate for a goal, Brazil continued to attack throughout the rest of the period. But they could not break the opponent's defense. Neither could Venezuela.
In the 89th minute, Gabriel Martinelli was fouled by Venezuelan defender Alexander Gonzales. Vinicius ran to protest, and Gonzales hit him in the face with his hand. This created tension between the two teams, Gonzales was shown a red card by the referee. Venezuela played with 10 men in the last 10 minutes of the added time. As Darival's team could not score, Brazil had to leave the field with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela.
