The bank accounts of actress Anjuman Ara Shilpi and her husband former member of parliament (MP) of Awami League and chairman of Premier Bank HBM Iqbal along with their three children have been seized.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence agency of Bangladesh Bank, has sent a letter to the country's banks and financial institutions with necessary instructions in this regard.
According to the letter, Hefzul Bari Mohammad Iqbal alias HBM Iqbal, his wife Anjuman Ara Shilpi, Dr. Moinuddin Iqbal, Ikram Iqbal and Naureen Iqbal, the children of Iqbal's first wife late Mumtaz Begum, were ordered to freeze their accounts. Account transactions of these individuals and sole proprietorships will be suspended for the next 30 days.
Mentioning that this instruction has been given in accordance with section 23(1)(c) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the letter further states that the information of all the accounts managed in the name of these persons and their related organizations is requested to be sent within the next 4 days. It has been asked to ensure that dealings with these persons as related businesses should only be in the business related matters of the respective organizations.
Besides owning a bank, HBM Iqbal is associated with various businesses. He is the Chairman of Premier Group. The group has various businesses including five-star hotels, restaurants, cement manufacturing, medical centers. He has also built several educational institutions in the country.
Apart from holding the position of Premier Bank chairman since 2011 through abuse of power, HBM Iqbal is accused of building Hotel Renaissance in Gulshan, Hilton Hotel and Resort in Gulshan-2 and Royal University of Dhaka. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to investigate corruption allegations against them.
