Jumbangla Desk: The government has allowed 43 companies to import another 193 million eggs to increase supply to the market and keep prices under control. This information was revealed on Tuesday (November 19) by the Ministry of Commerce.
According to sources, the Ministry of Commerce has sent a letter to the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports to take necessary measures regarding the import of these eggs on November 18. An order in this regard will be issued soon.
Earlier on October 23, 12 companies were allowed to import 4 crore eggs. And on October 7, 4.5 million eggs were allowed to import 4.5 million eggs. This permission will be valid till December 31 this year.
It is to be noted that the 'reasonable price' of eggs was fixed by the Department of Agriculture Marketing on September 15 to control the market of unbridled eggs. According to that, the price of each egg is 10 taka 58 paisa at the production level, 11 taka 01 paisa at the wholesale level and 11 taka 87 paisa at the retail level (a dozen 142 taka 44 paisa).
Also, if the market is not under control, the import of eggs is allowed in two phases and on October 17, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has given tax exemption on the import of eggs to keep the price of eggs in the market at a tolerable level within the affordability of the common people. On that day, the existing import duty on eggs was reduced from 25 percent to 5 percent.
However, after various dramas including market monitoring by various government ministries and departments, meetings with egg traders in different markets, import of eggs from India and reduction of import duty, some relief has started to return to the egg market. At present, eggs are being sold at Tk 144 per dozen.
