The High Court granted bail to former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhtar in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. As a result, there is no obstacle to Babul Akhtar's release, his lawyers said.

Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir heard on Babul's behalf in the court. He said that Babul Akhtar is already on bail in another case. Today, there is no obstacle to his release as he was granted bail in the wife murder case. Considering that the former police officer has been in jail for three years and seven months, the court granted him interim bail for six months. At the same time, Babul Akhtar has issued a ruling asking why permanent bail will not be granted.
After the political change in the country, on August 14, the third additional metropolitan session judge of Chittagong. Babul Akhtar applied for bail in the court of Jasim Uddin. On August 18, the judge made an order denying bail. Later he approached the High Court for bail.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mitu was shot and stabbed to death near her home on her way to drop her son in the school bus at Panchlaish Police Station and R. Nizam Road in the city. Babul Akhtar, the then SP of the police headquarters, filed a murder case against the unknown accused in Panchlaish police station of the city.
Babul Akhtar was dismissed from his job in August of that year after various dramas including interrogation at the intelligence office. Later he was arrested in the case of wife murder. Since then, Babul Akhter has been in jail.
On September 13, 2022, the investigating agency Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) filed a charge sheet in the court accusing seven people. On October 10, the court accepted the charge sheet. On March 13 this year, the court ordered the trial to be started by framing charges against the accused. Mitu's husband and former SC Babul Akhtar have been made the main accused in the charge sheet.
Others who have been accused in the charge sheet are - Md. Kamrul Islam Shikder Mucha, Ehteshamul Haque, Haniful Haque, Md. Motaleb Mia Wasim, Md. Anwar Hossain, Md. Khairul Islam Kalu and Shahjahan Miah. Among the accused, only Musa is absconding.
