The main opposition party in India's Lok Sabha, the Congress, has been accused of dual citizenship by the BJP several times. However, Karnataka resident S Vignesh Shishir has filed a public interest case in the Allahabad High Court of India demanding a CBI investigation in this regard.
Vignesh Shishir claimed in the Allahabad High Court that he has sufficient evidence that Rahul Gandhi is not only a citizen of India.
The BJP leader claimed in the court that he contacted the British government to get information about Rahul's citizenship. They gave some information. However, not all information is given for privacy reasons. There should be a CBI investigation in this regard. Center should also intervene in this matter.
The petitioner claims that Rahul Gandhi has British citizenship. So, he has no right to contest in Indian elections. The Allahabad High Court sought the Centre's opinion on the matter. Next hearing of the case on December 19. Earlier, during the hearing of this case, the Allahabad High Court sought the Central Government's opinion on this matter A division bench of Justices Ranjan Roy and Omprakash Shukla of the Allahabad High Court directed to submit a detailed report on the steps taken by the Center under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The judges said that before coming to any decision, what is the opinion of the Central Government and the Union Home Minister in this matter should be known. The court gave the Center till November 25 to submit the full report. The Center submitted all the information to the court in accordance with that order. Rahul Gandhi's citizenship has been questioned several times before. Earlier, BJP leader Subrahmanyam Swamy filed a case in the Delhi High Court on the same charge.
The husband claimed that Rahul's annual return documents filed in 2005 and 2006 through the British firm Backops Limited proved his British citizenship. Besides, in the declaration of a company in England in the name of Rahul, he mentioned himself as a citizen of England.
