The workers of Leni Fashion Garment Factory of Dhaka Export Processing Zone have blocked the highway for the second day demanding payment of 4 years' outstanding salary and various dues. At that time, the protesting workers also prevented the workers of other factories of DEPZ from entering.
The workers blocked the road in the DEPZ area of Nabinagar-Kaliakoir and Chandra highways from Wednesday morning. They also said that their program will continue until the demands are met.
The workers said that about 4 years ago, in 2021, the authorities closed the factory without paying dues under Section 26 (1) of the Wages and Labor Act. The authorities are arguing with the workers by showing various excuses. Although the date of payment of their dues has been fixed on November 30, the workers are suffering from uncertainty. For 4 years, no dues have been paid to the workers despite fixing the date. Therefore, the workers started protesting by blocking the road demanding the assurance of payment of dues on the scheduled date.
Workers Mahtab said, we will be forced to stop all the works of DEPZ until our salary is paid. Despite our various promises, everyone is cheating on the dues.
The protesting workers also said that we had given three demands to the Bepza authorities. But these demands are not accepted. One of them is to attend the Bepza chairman's blockade and guarantee the payment of all dues to the workers on November 30. But he appeared and promised to sell the factory within two months and pay the dues.
In this regard, Superintendent of Police of Shilpa Police-1 Sarwar Alam said, We have been asking for a solution to the matter for a long time. Even today we are trying our best to resolve the matter.
