The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has protested the news published by the news agency Reuters regarding the murder of Assistant Government Counsel Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed by the followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in the court premises in Chittagong.
The CMP said that the Reuters report was published without any discussion with the concerned official. The police officer named in the report was not contacted by a Reuters reporter. But using his name the speech has been propagated.
In a message sent to the press on Wednesday, it is said, 'Court premises focused on the arrest and bail hearing of the accused Sanatan Jagran Manch leader Chandan Kumar Dhar Prakash Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in Case No. 52, dated 31/10/2024 of Kotwali Police Station of Chittagong City, dated 31/10/2024. And on the strange situation around him, the foreign press told Reuters on November 27 2024 AD A report titled “One Killed in Bangladesh as Hindu protesters clash with police” published at 12:27 PM (GMT+6) has come to the attention of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The report was later published in many other media outlets, including Voice of America. "A Muslim lawyer defending Das was killed amid protests outside the court [in Chittagong]," said police officer Liaquat Ali', quoting Chittagong Metropolitan Police South Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Liaquat Ali Khan in the report.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari's followers clashed with law enforcement and lawyers demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in the sedition case on Tuesday. At one point in the clash, Chinmoy Das' followers picked up lawyer Saiful Islam Alif from under the court building and took him behind Rangam Convention Hall. There, this lawyer of the state side was killed with native weapons and left.
Video footage of the killing went viral on social media in no time. It shows that lawyer Alif is lying on the ground after being attacked by a group of radical protesters. He was bleeding continuously from his neck and head. But even then the followers of Chinmoy Das continued to attack him mercilessly.
But according to the Reuters report, Muslim lawyer Saiful Islam was fighting the legal battle for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari.
CMP's message also said, 'Reuters or any journalist has not spoken to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Liaquat Ali Khan in this regard. At the time of the incident, he was responsible for normalizing the law and order situation in the court premises and surrounding areas.
There are four constables in Chittagong named Liaquat. They also did not give any statement to anyone. It is against journalistic ethics to continue to make up one's own statements as those of the police officer in charge without taking anyone's statement. We believe that in the future Reuters and other media will play a more responsible role in publishing such news.
