Last Tuesday, a woman gave birth to a baby named Peter at the age of 61. Who is now the oldest mother in the country. Health officials of the country said this.
The baby was born through in vitro fertilization at the Skopje University Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Clinic director Irena Alexioska Papestiev hailed the achievement as a milestone in medical science.
"The birth of baby Peter by a 61-year-old patient shows that almost anything is possible with medicine," he said.
The reason for his words is that the woman was suffering from several diseases including high blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy. That's why doctors monitored him carefully. But despite the challenges, the mother and baby were released in good condition on Tuesday.
The woman went through 10 separate in vitro treatments over the years to become a mother. But in the end he succeeded. Her 65-year-old husband is overjoyed with the baby's arrival.
But even more happy are the doctors. Because the population in the Balkans is under challenge. In 2023, the birth rate in North Macedonia was 1.48 percent. Also, due to emigration and economic liberalization, the population of the country is decreasing day by day. However, if this medical system is used, older people will be able to give birth to children in the future.
