Dr. Muhammad Yunus is an icon of social entrepreneurship and a pioneer of microfinance, globally celebrated for his innovative approach to alleviating poverty. As the founder of Grameen Bank and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, his journey is both inspiring and transformative. This blog explo

1. Early Life and Education Dr. Yunus was born on June 28, 1940, in Chattogram, Bangladesh. He grew up in a middle-class family and was deeply influenced by his parents, especially his mother’s compassion for the poor.

a. Educational Background Graduated in Economics from Dhaka University in 1960. Earned a Fulbright scholarship to study at Vanderbilt University in the U.S., where he completed his Ph.D. in Economics in 1969.

 

--- 2. Early Career Dr. Yunus began his career as an economics professor at Middle Tennessee State University. Upon returning to Bangladesh after the Liberation War in 1971, he joined Chittagong University as the head of the Economics Department.

a. Turning Point The famine of 1974 profoundly affected him. Witnessing extreme poverty in nearby villages motivated him to bridge the gap between theoretical economics and real-world problems.

a. The Birth of Microfinance In 1976, Dr. Yunus initiated a small experiment, lending $27 from his pocket to 42 women in Jobra village. This act marked the genesis of the microfinance model. b. Establishment of Grameen Bank Grameen Bank was formally established in 1983, with a mission to provide small loans to the rural poor, especially women, without requiring collateral.

a. Revolutionizing Microcredit Dr. Yunus’s approach proved that poor individuals are creditworthy, challenging traditional banking norms.

b. Empowering Women Over 90% of Grameen Bank’s borrowers are women, emphasizing empowerment and financial independence.

c. Nobel Peace Prize (2006) Dr. Yunus and Grameen Bank jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development from below.

d. Global Recognition Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009). Congressional Gold Medal (2010).
