The President of Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) protested and condemned the beating of the owner of Mahmud Jeans and Mahmud Denim Limited in Kaliakore, Gazipur. Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the deputy managing director (DMD) of the factory, Mohammad Rafi Mahmud, was beaten and injured in Chandra area of Dhaka-Tangail highway.
It is reported that the workers of Mahmud Jeans and Denim Limited factory did not attend work at around 9 o'clock in the morning and started a protest demanding unpaid wages. Later, the aggrieved workers blocked both sides of the road connecting Chandra flyover. Due to this, the traffic on that road was stopped and severe traffic jam was created. On getting the information, police and army personnel went to the spot and talked to the workers but failed to control the situation.
Around 4 pm, the owner went to the front of the factory to talk to the workers about the arrears of wages. At that time, when the workers threw brickbats at the owners and members of the industrial police, the members of the joint forces retreated from the scene. Later, the workers blocked the owners of the factory inside the factory.
In this situation, the deputy managing director of the factory, Mohammad Rafi, was severely beaten and seriously injured when he tried to talk to the workers. Currently, he is said to be under treatment in the hospital.
Injured Rafi Mahmud said, Thursday tried to kill him, I could not speak for two minutes, the crowd started attacking from all sides. They were later dragged and thrown under the flyover and beaten with large bricks, metal rods and tree branches. He was knocked unconscious for a while when he was hit in the back of the head. When he regained consciousness, he was dragged inside the factory by his arms, legs and neck and locked at the gate.
The workers said that the factory authorities, workers, BGMEA and senior officials of the administration held a meeting and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway as they did not receive any message from the factory even though they had promised to pay the salary on November 28.
Riyad Mahmud, OC of Kaliakor police station, said that the excited workers beat up the owner of the factory, Mohammad Rafi Mahmud. Action will be taken if the factory authority submits the case.
