Jumbangla Desk: Matarbari Thermal Power Plant of Dwip Upazila Maheshkhali of Cox's Bazar is starting power generation again from today. Earlier, yesterday Friday (November 29) around 10:30 am, a ship carrying the Indonesian flag arrived at the jetty of the power plant with 70,000 tons of coal. After that, the process of coal evacuation is going on since afternoon.
Yesterday, Manowar Hossain Majumdar, Supervising Engineer (Management) of Matarbari Site Office of Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited, the company managing the power plant, informed the journalists about this information.
He said, next Sunday, another ship from Indonesia will come to Matarbari with 66 thousand tons of coal. After the legal complications, they have signed an agreement with Meghna Group and a joint company called Birla to import 3.5 million tons of coal in a year for this power plant. Meanwhile, ships loaded with coal from Indonesia crowded the jetty. As a result, the first unit of 600 MW is going into production again from this Saturday (November 30) after being closed for a month. Now the demand for electricity is less than before. However, with the increase in demand, the second unit will produce 600 MW more.
Earlier, this 1,200 megawatt two-unit power plant was completely shut down due to the coal crisis on October 31.
