How was Wikimedia born from Wiki?

Besides Wikipedia, other wikis still follow WikiWikiWeb's rules and adapt them to their own needs. Not just ideologically, many technical aspects of WikiWikiWeb are still used directly by other wikis. Cunningham wrote a book called 'The Wiki Way' in 2001 by compiling this knowledge. This is a valuable book for those interested in the history and culture of wikis.

There is a principle called 'Cunningham's Law'. According to this principle, the best way to get an answer to a question on the Internet is not to ask the question, but to answer someone else's question incorrectly. According to his observations, people may even delay answering questions; But he will not be slow to catch someone else's mistake. By catching this mistake, he may quickly answer your original question. If you pay attention, you may find some examples of this principle in the social media around you.

Inspired by WikiWikiWeb, many wikis were later born. Among these, 'Used Wiki' has become quite popular. And another wiki called 'meatballwiki' was created just for discussion and documentation of other wikis and the larger 'wiki culture'.

After 1990, when the Internet began to open up to the general public, the prices of Internet-based start-ups began to skyrocket in the US capital market. New businessmen started to create internet based businesses. This whole phenomenon is called 'dotcom bubble' or 'dotcom boom'. One of the new companies created in this dotcom boom is 'Bomis'. The company was founded by Jimmy Wells, Tim Schell and Michael Davis. Vommys have a funny nickname, 'Bitter Old Men in Suits'. The significance of this name, of course, can only be told by Jimmy Wells.

However, the website is there. Now what is the work of this company? Three entrepreneurs fell into trouble with work. First, he created an online directory where used car information can be found and used cars can be bought from there. There was no response. Then wanted to start online food ordering business. It is difficult to pay for food advertising. So he left that and started 'Internet Directory'. It was well worth it. Then gradually they started working in specialized areas. At one point, he started serving adult content. A collection of adult images could be enjoyed by subscribing to 'Bummy's Premium'.

Jimmy later turned to more innovative work with vomit. Open source, hacker culture, HyperCard, WikiWikiWeb—all of them have been used by him since long ago. Besides, he had a distinct weakness for open knowledge. Jimmy's dream was to create an online encyclopedia. He started an online encyclopedia called 'Nupedia' under Bomis Company. All content there will be under an open source license and will be monetized through advertising on the site. For Nupedia, Jimmy appointed a man named Larry Sanger as 'Editor in Chief'.

Larry had a PhD in philosophy. To write on Nupedia, the writer had to have a PhD in a specific subject. Also, each article was published in a rigorous seven-step process that took at least two weeks. In order to start writing an article on a particular topic, there had to be at least three authors on that topic. All authors were volunteers. Going through this rigorous process resulted in only 21 articles being added to Nupedia in its first year. Everyone knew Nupedia was going to be a failed project.

To rescue Nupedia from this situation, Jimmy and Larry decided to open a 'wiki' website together. Everyone can write articles there. Articles from this wiki website were later edited and published on Nupedia. From there, 'Wikipedia' was born.

Wikipedia is a combination of the words 'wiki' and 'pedia'. (Needless to say, the word 'pedia' comes from encyclopedia.) This is called a portmanteau in English. Since then, online activists from around the world continue to join Wikipedia. More than 200 articles were added to English Wikipedia in the first month. And in the first year it exceeds 18 thousand. Wikipedia became so successful that at one point Nupedia was shut down. Vomiting also stopped. Wikipedia remains one of the most valuable websites on the Internet to date. Getting richer every minute.

A revolution started with the help of Wikipedia. Along with written knowledge, knowledge can also be gained from images, audio or video. From that idea was born many of Wikipedia's co-projects like Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies. This world grows into a massive movement, a movement to spread open knowledge to every human being on earth. The name is Wikimedia Movement. Wikimedia refers to this huge movement. Wikipedia is a project of the Wikimedia movement.
