Three people, including two drivers and a passenger, were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between a night coach and a paddy-laden truck in Birganj, Dinajpur. Twenty more passengers of the night coach were injured in the incident.
The injured have been rescued and admitted to Birganj Upazila Health Complex. The accident occurred at around 8 am on Friday in the Chakai Jadurmor area of Dhaka-Panchagarh highway in Sujalpur union of the upazila.
Upon receiving the news, members of the fire service from Birganj, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur district headquarters and Birganj police station participated in the rescue operation. The deceased in the incident are: Abdul Karim (30), son of Amjad Ali, son of Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh upazila, driver of the night coach, Anwar Hossain (28), son of Rafiqul Islam, son of Ahmednagar area of the same district, truck driver, and Hasina Begum (30), wife of the deceased Rezaul Karim, of Sundol village of Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon district.
Birganj Police Station OC Abdul Gafur said that when a passenger night coach of a Thakurgaon-Ranishankoil-bound heritage sleeper that left Dhaka reached Jadurmor area of Birganj upazila, it collided head-on with a truck carrying paddy bound for Dinajpur coming from the opposite direction. At that time, the vehicles twisted and fell on the two roads. Three people, including two drivers and one passenger, were killed on the spot. At least 20 passengers were injured in the incident.
Birganj Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr. Amrit Sarkar said that so far 20 injured people have been admitted to the hospital. Of these, three are in critical condition and have been sent to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
