Jumbangla Desk: Bangladesh is in the first row among the countries at risk of climate change and natural disasters. Despite being a disaster-prone country, Bangladesh still lags behind in providing information about weather and climate, river water status, early warning to farmers.

Therefore, with the aim of increasing and sustaining agricultural production, the Department of Agricultural Extension has undertaken a project to provide weather information to the farmers and to increase the capacity of the farmers to adapt to its harmful effects. Under this project, the government has started using satellite technology in agriculture in the country.

A workshop on 'use of satellites in agriculture' was held at the capital's Agricultural Research Council on Saturday afternoon to give details on these issues. It tells how the agricultural sector can be taken to a more prosperous place by providing the services of this technology to the farmers of 64 districts of the country. Professor Dr. University of Washington presented the main article in the event. Faisal Hossain.

It was informed in the workshop that farmers will be informed about various issues mainly by sending SMS through this technology. In particular, any problem in the paddy field or when the land needs irrigation, even how much water is needed will also be informed. In the meantime, it has been experimentally applied in some districts of the country. This time, the Department of Agricultural Extension has taken the initiative to deliver it to the farmers of the whole country.

In the welcome speech, the project director Dr. Md. Shah Kamal Khan said, through the Agricultural Meteorological Information System Improvement Project, development of agricultural meteorological monitoring system, medium and long-term seasonal forecasting, increasing the quality of weather forecasting and advisory services, and a quick and effective communication to deliver these services regularly and quickly to the grassroots level. And distribution system is being developed.

For this purpose, in 2017, with the financial support of the World Bank, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Bangladesh Water Development Board and the Department of Agricultural Extension took a project titled 'Bangladesh Weather and Climate Service Project'. Currently the organization is implementing projects through three separate DPPs. The Department of Agricultural Extension under the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing the Agricultural Meteorological Information System Improvement Project.

Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Bakhtiar said, the use of technology in the country's agriculture has started long ago with the promise of building a smart Bangladesh. But the marginal farmers are still not very aware about its proper use. Therefore, the Department of Agricultural Extension has taken various initiatives to facilitate the use of technology among farmers across the country.
