Jumbangla Desk: 16 sluices of Kaptai Dam have been closed as the water in the lake has decreased a little. The 16 gates of the dam were opened by 6 inches last Saturday (September 14) evening as the lake water reached the danger level. In this, 9 thousand cusecs of water is released into the Karnaphuli river every second.

According to sources in the control room of the Kaptai hydroelectric power plant, the sluices of the dam were closed on Monday (September 16) morning.

Meanwhile, 216 megawatts of electricity is being produced by keeping 5 units of the power plant operational despite the closure of water taps. It uses 32 thousand cusecs of water per second. The water level of Kaptai Lake was recorded at 108.37 MSL (Mean Sea Level) this morning. The maximum water capacity of the lake is 109 MSL.

On the other hand, even though the water level has decreased a little, still around 15 thousand people in the district are stuck in water. Flooding has occurred in the lower areas of Rangamati Sadar, Longadu, Naniarchar, Barkal, Jurachhari and other upazilas. The water prisoners are spending inhuman days.

Noor Nahar, a resident of Brahmantila area of the city, said, I have been living with water for a month. Sometimes water increases, sometimes decreases. We have not received any relief aid.

ATM Abduzzah, manager of Kaptai hydroelectric power station, said that the water level of the lake is decreasing due to lack of rain, so the gate has been closed. He also said that whether the gate will be opened depends on the rainfall.
