Sheikh Hasina submitted this resignation on August 5 along with His Excellency the President.

In the resignation letter, Sheikh Hasina wrote, "It is with deep sadness that I would like to inform you that in view of the recent protests and clashes in which more than 300 people have lost their lives and to avoid any further loss of life, I have decided to resign." I am resigning from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

He further wrote, I accept full responsibility for these incidents and my commitment to the safety and welfare of the people of this country will always remain unwavering.


In her resignation letter, Sheikh Hasina wrote, "For the past fifteen years, I have had the opportunity to serve you, which is the greatest honor of my life." However, the recent events prove that, at this moment, another leadership is needed to move the country forward. I hope, my resignation will open a new way for development of Bangladesh and peace will be re-established.

"I deeply regret what my government has done in these difficult times," he wrote at the end. I accept all the obligations and take this decision in the larger interest of Bangladesh.

Incidentally, Sheikh Hasina left for India with her sister Rehana in a military helicopter on August 5 at noon. And that's where he currently resides.
