MTNews24 Desk: Due to the excessive heat of the last few days, onions imported from India are rotting in Heli, Dinajpur. Traders are not able to store onions kept in godown due to rise in temperature.

Some selected onions are sold at the rate of Tk 80 to Tk 90 but most of the onions have to be sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg. Onions that are rotting should be thrown away. Onion traders have to face loss due to this.

Meanwhile, Abdus Salam, an onion trader in Hilli, said that onion is a perishable product, there is no opportunity to keep onions in stock. But I buy from port and sell wholesale from godown. Onions are rotting in excessive heat. Electricity is available for an average of 10 to 12 hours per day. Due to which the onion stored in the godown is rotting.

We have to sell onions at Tk 80 to Tk 85 per kg excluding import cost from India. But due to rotting of onion in summer, it has to be sold at the rate of 40 to 50 taka. If the government had properly monitored the issue of electricity, we the traders of Hilli would have been spared from the loss.

Meanwhile, GM Vipul Krishna Mandal of Dinajpur Palli Vidyut Samiti-2 said that a unit of Barapukuria thermal power plant has been commissioned. When all the units are operational, the problem of electricity will be solved. However, in Hakimpur (Hili) upazila, there is a daily demand of 7 to 8 megawatts of electricity. Against which 2.5 to 3 megawatts are allocated there. As a result now load shedding is going on. Hopefully, this problem will be resolved soon.

Meanwhile, as a result of the withdrawal of customs duties by the Indian government, the import of onions from India was supposed to start on Sunday (September 15) morning, but the import of onions did not start due to server problems inside India. As a result, the onion traders of the port are in more trouble.
