He was the head coach of Bangladesh national team from June 2014 to October 2017. But in 2017, midway through the contract, Hathurusinghe left Bangladesh quite suddenly. At that time, it was discussed that he may have left the country because of a bad relationship with a cricketer or a board owner. However, he said this time, he left the responsibility of Bangladesh at that time because of being the coach of Sri Lanka.
In a recent podcast about leaving Bangladesh for the first time, Hathuru said, '(Laughs) It's a very good question. A friend of mine asked me the same question today. Then actually I asked many of my friends what should I do? Sri Lankan cricket was in a bad state then. You will remember that we lost to Zimbabwe, there was a lot of buzz in the air, match fixing corruption and so on. There was one thing in me – that was my passion.'
'That I want to coach my country. I think that was the best time. The then vice-president was probably Mr. Mathuana who also spoke to me first. He asked me to take the responsibility. They had no coach then. Work had to be done with an interim coach. So it was a combination of these two factors – that my passion was to coach my country. I have been able to become what I have become because of cricket.'- He added.
About joining Sri Lanka Cricket, Hathuru said, 'There was also a desire to fix Sri Lankan cricket with it. Because we weren't that bad then. I knew there was something going on that wasn't quite right. These were both reasons.'
