Jumbangla Desk: 200 members of the Bangladesh Navy engaged in the UN peacekeeping mission in Juba, South Sudan have been awarded the UN Peacekeeping Medal.

On this occasion, a medal parade of the BANFMU-9 contingent was held in Juba, South Sudan on Tuesday (September 17).

On the occasion, the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMIS) Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramaniam, who was present as the chief guest, presented the UN Peacekeeping Medal to 200 naval personnel, including naval officers and sailors, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to peacekeeping operations.

It was attended by the officials of Unmis force headquarters and other senior officers and related persons.

During the medal parade, Force Commander Lt. Gen. Subramaniam praised the members of the Bangladesh Navy engaged in the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

He pointed out that the Bangladesh Navy Contingent is making an outstanding contribution to the transportation of fuel, foodstuffs and other vital commodities of the United Nations by conducting operations with great courage and skill in the hostile environment of the Nile and conflict areas.

He also commented that the Bangladesh Navy Contingent is admirably performing the great responsibility of conducting regular patrols on the river, recce operations, rescue operations, diving operations and providing transportation and security to all the United Nations agencies deployed in South Sudan.


He expressed his gratitude to the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Government for providing assistance to the United Nations peacekeeping operations and hoped that this trend would continue in the future.

Since 2015, the Bangladesh Navy contingent has been participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. As the sole marine force of UNMIS in South Sudan, the Bangladesh Navy's Force Marine Unit is engaged in the implementation of the UN mandate in the wider Nile region. Bangladesh Navy Contingent has successfully completed 50 Logistics Operations (Operation Life Line) along the 1300 km long Nile River. Ever since its deployment, the Bangladesh Navy Contingent has been making outstanding contributions to the development and peace of the South Sudan government and people.

Also, Bangladesh Navy's warship Banauja Sangram is playing a commendable role in international waters in establishing world peace by proudly flying the country's flag in the turbulent Mediterranean Sea.- ISPR
