Jumbangla Desk: After three days, import of onion from India with 20 percent tariff has started through Hili land port of Dinajpur. Onion import from the neighboring country started from 5:30 pm on Tuesday (September 17). On this day at 6:30 in the evening, 123 tons of onions entered Hili land port in 4 Indian trucks.

According to port authority sources, 3 importing companies namely Messrs. Shaukat Traders, Messrs. Sumaiya Enterprises and Messrs. BK Traders of Hili land port have imported these onions.

Meanwhile, onion was sold at the highest price of Tk 84 per kg at the Panama Port Link Limited premises of Hili land port on Tuesday due to the import of onion at low duty. As a result, local onion traders feel that the price of onion will be affected in the local retail market as well.

Earlier on September 13, India reduced the 40 percent tariff on onion exports to 20 percent and reduced the minimum export price from $550 to $405. But since it was not added to the Indian server, onion import was closed for the last 4 days. Traders said that since India relaxed the conditions for onion export, the price will come down by at least 15-20 rupees per kg.

Earlier, in December last year, India stopped onion export on the pretext of internal crisis. Then in May this year, the neighboring country lifted the ban by setting a minimum export price of USD 550 and imposing a 40 percent tariff to discourage onion exports. Recently, the country's government withdrew from that condition due to increased supply within India.
