Jumbangla Desk: The importer-exporters have started importing onion from India at the new customs duty through Hili land port of Dinajpur. Onion prices are expected to come down soon.
The president of Dinajpur Heli Sthalbandar C&F Association Md. Ferdous Rahman confirmed this information.
He said that 123 metric tons of onions entered the country in 4 Indian trucks at the new tariff from Tuesday evening to 8 pm.
Traders of Dinajpur Hili land port said that due to the increase in supply of onions in India, on September 13, the Ministry of Commerce of India issued a notification setting the export duty from 40 percent to 20 percent and the export price from 550 USD to 145 USD to 405 USD per ton.
But since the notification published by the Ministry of Commerce of India was not connected to the customs server, onion import was stopped for two days on September 14 and 15. As the notification published by the Ministry of Commerce was attached to the server of India yesterday, the import of onion through the port has been overcome by that complication. Along with this, onion import will increase and the price will decrease, this is the expectation of the import-export factor domestic businessmen.
Earlier, the Indian government stopped the export of onion from December 8 to March 31 last year on the pretext of internal crisis. Then the Indian government banned the second phase for an indefinite period last March. Due to the shortage of onions in the country, the prices started to increase. After almost 5 months, on May 4, the Indian government lifted the ban by setting a minimum export value of 550 USD and a duty rate of 40 percent.
Shahidul Islam Shahid, an onion importer at Hili land port, said that they expect 10 to 15 percent duty reduction as the new rules are connected to the server. As a result, the price of onion in the market will decrease to a large extent.
Deputy Assistant Officer of Hili Land Port Plant Department. Yusuf Ali said that import and export businessmen at Hili land port have shown interest in onion import. As a result, 4 more traders have opened new LCs on Tuesday. He expressed hope that if these onions enter the country, the market price of onions will come under control.
