Jumbangla Desk: If the National Identity Card (NID) is lost, there is no obligation to make a General Diary (GD) at the police station in order to get a new card. Besides, Election Commission (EC) officials are in favor of removing the signature of public representatives in case of becoming a new voter.

Sources said that the officials made such a recommendation when the EC secretary called a special coordination meeting recently after a secretary-level meeting with the chief adviser to the interim government. It is a policy decision to facilitate NID services.

The matter has also come up in the minutes signed by EC Secretary Shafiul Azim on Wednesday (September 18).

It is said that the officials participating in the discussion in the meeting said that the service receiver has to face irony or harassment to get the signature of the ward councilor or such public representative on the application for obtaining the national identity card. This is not required if there is a certificate signed by the public representative.

Apart from this, many times other documents including house rent agreement documents are requested from the service recipient, which is not possible for the service recipient to provide. In taking smart national identity card service, the service recipient has to be harassed by brokers in various computer shops and in this case, online service can be simplified by creating a simple app like Bkash app for self photo verification.

On the other hand, in case of re-printing of lost National Identity Card, provision should be made to withdraw the current directive of giving GD copy to the service recipient. To get a GD, the beneficiaries have to go through a lot of hardships.

Officials also said that due to the lack of proper publicity regarding the activities carried out by the Election Commission and the National Identity Card service, the service users do not get correct information, due to which they have to resort to brokers. Mass publicity can be done in this regard by simplifying the service.

It is mandatory to use the data entry operator's account for initial data entry in providing National Identity Card services. In this situation, if an operator is absent, even if he is the head of the office, he cannot provide service to the customer in any way. In such cases, an alternative data entry in the name of Upazila/ Thana Election Officer may be included in the account system.

The application form for obtaining online National Identity Card service should be designed in such a way that it is automatically categorized as soon as the application form is entered. After these discussions EC Secretary decided to take appropriate measures to facilitate NID service.
