According to sources, this incident happened mainly due to mobile phone theft. 6 mobile phones were stolen during a cricket game between students in the hall field in the afternoon. Later, when he entered the Tofajjal hall around 8 o'clock during the game, some students arrested him. They think Tofajjal is stealing the mobile. He was taken to the guest room and interrogated and lightly beaten by some of the students. Later he was taken to the guest room again after being given food and drink. There he was beaten to death. The accused students did not leave Tofazzal even after knowing that he was mentally unstable. The proctorial team of the university, the senior students tried to convince them in various ways but failed.
According to the investigation and eyewitness sources, Tofazzal was beaten the most by Jalal Ahmed, the recently resigned Deputy Science and Technology Secretary of the Chhatra League and a student of Physics Department, Mohammad Sumon, a student of Soil Water and Environment Department, Feroz of Plant Science Department, Abdus Samad of Physics Department, Pharmacy. Mohammad Yamuz Zaman of the Department and Mottakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science. All of them are students of Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall.
Another source said that Sultan, a zoology student, first caught him as a thief and brought him to the guest room. According to the source, those involved in the beating were Rashed Kamal Anik of the Department of Soil Water and Environment, Rabbi of the Department of Mathematics and Wajibul of the Department of Marine Science.
Narrating the incident, a student who witnessed the incident said, 'I saw the thief in the hall group at 8 o'clock. In the guest room of the hall, go and see the thief sitting. There were many first year and second year boys in the room. He was not killed much in the guest room. After being lightly beaten there, he was brought to the canteen for feeding. Then I heard that he was taken to the guest room of the extension building. I then went there and saw the batches of 20-21, 21-22 and 22-23 sessions. About 30 people in all. They did not kill the first year batch. They hit too much in the 20-21 and 21-22 sessions.'
He also said, 'Two or three people are killing him there. They are - Mohammad Suman, Wajibul, Feroz and Jalal of the 20-21 session of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment. Among them Suman, Feroze and Jalal killed the most. Jalal tied the hands of the thief in the guest room. Suman kills him with his eyes closed, beating him and (Tofajjal) falls down. After that, when water was brought and water was given to him, he sat up. At this time, everyone clapped.'
The student said, “Everyone is happy because they can beat him again. Then the beating started again. Firoz has killed the most in this round. Later came Jalal of Physics Department 18-19 session. Jalal comes and encourages him to kill more; Says - 'beat, beat as you wish; Myra Felis na once'. At the same time, he also set fire to his legs with a gas light. Later Suman came and cut Tofajjal's eyebrows and hair."
The student further said, 'Later Sir (resident teacher of the hall) came there. I tried to persuade them many times, but they refused. Sir is coming when he is taken out from the guest room of extension building. The flesh of Tofajjal's right leg and left leg fell off due to the beating. Many tried to save him. I say bring clothes, tie her legs. Because bleeding will make you senseless. Later, a junior brought clothes and tied his legs.'
The student said, "The attackers were trying to beat him and get him to confess that he had taken the stolen phone." At one stage of the beating, Tofazzal gave two or three phone numbers. When calling that number, the other side informed that he was mentally disturbed. But they (students) did not want to believe. Tofazzal was beaten up in front of the teachers who came there. The teachers tried to stop but failed.'
He further informed, 'Later Tofajjal was taken to the guest room of the main building of the hall. After taking him there, Jalal beat him badly. Boots came and trampled Tofajjal's fingers. I say, brother, what do they do? Jalal laughed hearing that. I told him many times, still he repeatedly stomped his fingers on the ground. Jalal is hitting his private parts with a stick. Many senior brothers are coming and trying to bring them back. But they didn't mean anything.'
Narrating the next incident, another witness said, 'Then the proctorial team came. Some of the accused did not want to hand over Tofazzal to the team. They were saying, if they give it to the proctorial team, they will give it to the police, and the police will leave it. There have been many quarrels with members of the proctorial team over this. For 25 minutes the teachers tried to convince them a lot. They said, "No Mairo, Maira will not get any results." Give it to the police, the police will try. Proctoral team will take action according to the law. But they didn't listen to the sirs. They say, we will see. If you give it to the police, they will give it on the condition that the police will search him. If he doesn't get (the phone) then he has to return it to them again.'
He further said, 'Later the proctorial team realized that Tofajjal's condition was very bad. No one can survive after beating so much. His flesh has fallen. His private parts were severely injured. Fingers are completely amputated. That Jalal boy did. They are doing it in front of everyone.'
Later seeing the situation was bad, at one point a group of five-six students took him to Shahbag police station. From there he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 12 o'clock in the night. At that time, when the doctor declared Tofajjal dead, the students got stuck. It has not been possible to get the statements of the accused students on these issues.
Farooq, in-charge of police outpost of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said that when he was brought to the hospital in an injured condition, the doctor declared him dead after examination. The body has been kept in the morgue.
Meanwhile, Abu Bakr Majumdar, coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement, made a statement demanding a fair trial in the death incident. They also held a short rally at Raju Bhaskar with a procession from Fazlul Haque Hall around 4:30 am.
