Jumbangla Desk: Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority (BABICHAK) has taken several coordinated initiatives to keep Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and adjacent areas horn free from next October.

In a press release today, the chairman of Babychak, Air Vice Marshal Md. Manzoor Kabir Bhuiyan said that an integrated initiative has been taken to protect the environment of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and adjacent areas from October 1 to prevent noise pollution, which is seen as a serious threat to public health.

Bangladesh Air Force, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Dhaka North City Corporation, BRTA, Dhaka Traffic, Roads and Highways, Department of Environment, APBN, Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Owners Association, Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association, teachers, student representatives, etc. Will act as an active participant in integrated initiatives.

The initiative has been taken to stop honking on the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and the 3 km road from La Meridien Hotel on the south side of the airport to Scholastica Campus on the north side.

The steps taken to implement this decision include putting up banners and billboards with awareness slogans at various places to create awareness among people at all levels, distribution of leaflets, electronic, print and social media campaigns, speed control of vehicles, proper parking inside Hazrat Shahjalal Airport, BRTA's Through text messaging to motorists and vehicle owners and setting up mobile courts for law breakers.

As a participant, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has declared Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and its adjoining areas as 'quiet areas'. They will put up various awareness signboards to discourage honking to prevent noise pollution, so that drivers can easily see them. DNCC will also take special measures to keep the signs visible at night.

Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Owners Association will provide messages to all bus and truck drivers to prevent noise pollution and create awareness about noise pollution among truck and bus drivers.

The Department of Environment will conduct publicity activities to encourage people to play an active role in reducing noise pollution. As part of this, public notices will be published in several national newspapers, scrolls and TVCs will be broadcast on television and leaflets will be distributed in designated areas.

BRTA will send at least three small messages to all drivers and owners in Dhaka city to make them aware of not creating noise pollution at the airport and nearby areas.

Apart from this, mobile courts will be active at three points from La Meridien Hotel north to Scholastica campus for the next 7 days from October 1. Environment department magistrates will be on duty at La Méridien, Babychock magistrates at airport roundabout and BRTA magistrates at Scholastica Point. They will be assisted by traffic police, volunteers, students and representatives of bus-truck owners' associations.
