Jumbangla Desk: The minimum wage of garment workers has been fixed at 12 thousand 500 rupees by the wage board. The new wages were decided in a meeting at the office of the labor board at Segunbagicha in the capital on Tuesday. Factory owners-workers and government representatives were present in the meeting.

Later, Minister of State for Labor Munnujan Sufian announced the decision to increase wages in a press conference at the Secretariat. He said that it has been decided to increase the minimum salary of the workers by about 56 percent. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the capacity of the sector, the quality of life of workers, inflation.


Last April, the government set up the Minimum Wage Board to fix the wages of garment workers. In the fourth meeting of the board on October 22, the representative of the labor side proposed a minimum wage of 20 thousand 393 taka. On the contrary, the owner proposed 10 thousand 400 taka.

Angry with this wage proposal of the owner, the workers went on strike from the next day. First, the movement demanding increase in wages started in Gazipur, but later it spread to Ashulia-Savara.
