As announced by the Commission, Anudha Kumara Dishanayake was elected as the President as the leader of the National People's Power (NPP) alliance. Dishanayake was elected president with 42.31 percent votes. His two closest rivals, fellow opposition leader John Balawaga (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa, got 32.76 percent of the vote. Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe got only 17 percent votes.

Apart from the election, one question has been circulating among everyone recently. Who is this Anudha Kumara Dishanayake?

The full name of the new president of Sri Lanka is Dishanayake Mudianselage Anudha Kumara Dishanayake. Dishanayek was born on November 24, 1968 in a lower-middle-class family in Thambuthegama village of Anuradhapura district, about 170 kilometers from the country's capital, Colombo. Father was a daily laborer and mother a housewife.

Through hard work from childhood, he earned a science degree from the University of Kelaniya. He became active in politics during his student days and joined the armed movement of the JVP in 1987-89.

In 1995, Dissanayake joined the central executive committee of the JVP and in 2000 was elected as a Member of Parliament from the nationalist list. He fought for the sovereignty of the country by taking a stand against the LTTE (Tamil Rebellion).

Meanwhile, to ensure the support of Buddhist monks, Dissanayake expressed his own support for Article 9 of the Constitution and said, "His party will resist any attempt to change this article."

Dissanayake strongly criticized the India-Sri Lanka Treaty of 1987. He also took an anti-Indian expansionist stance and opposed any attempt to return the Kachathivu island to India.

Sri Lanka's new president Dissanayake said his government will renegotiate the terms of the International Monetary Fund bailout agreement, which is contrary to the current government's policy. He also promised a new beginning for Sri Lanka. The president also said that he will work to free the country from the economic crisis.

It should be noted that Sri Lanka became a matter of concern to the world a couple of years ago. The financial crisis reached its peak. He is burdened with a huge amount of debt. The government is struggling to handle everything. It is needless to say that whoever will be the president will have a heavy responsibility in this situation.
