General Waqar-uz-Zaman took over as the army chief a few weeks before Hasina's departure. In the interview, he said, after the reforms, the transition to democracy should be done within one year to one and a half years. But at this time he emphasized on patience.

General Walker said, "The interim government's chief advisor Dr. Yunus and he (Army Chief) are meeting every week and they have a very good relationship. The Bangladesh Army supports the government's efforts to stabilize the country."

The army chief said, “After Hasina's ouster, the country is going through massive reforms. In line with these government reforms, allegations of wrongdoing against army personnel are being investigated. Some soldiers have already been punished."

General Walker said, “If any active duty member is found guilty, then of course I will take action. Some military officers may have acted beyond their professional responsibilities while working in an agency directly controlled by the former prime minister or home minister."

The army chief said, “I am a professional soldier. I want to keep my army professional."

General Walker served a long career as an infantry officer. He said, "Bangladesh Army under his leadership will not interfere politically."

"This (keeping the military out of politics) can only happen when there is some balance of power between the president and the prime minister, where the armed forces can be kept directly under the president," he said.
