Local time Tuesday (September 24) on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. IMF Managing Director expressed his support in a meeting with Muhammad Yunus.

Principal Adviser Kristalina Georgieva gave a brief briefing on the student-led mass uprising that overthrew the previous dictatorship in Bangladesh. Then Cristalina told him, this is a different country. This is Bangladesh 2.0.

In the meeting, Professor Yunus spoke about six commissions set up by his interim government to recommend important reforms in elections, civil administration, police, judiciary, anti-corruption and the constitution.

He said that the government will discuss the recommendations of the commission with the political parties.

The date of the election will be announced when the consensus is reached on the reforms and the voter list is prepared, said Dr. Yunus.

The chief executive of the IMF expressed his support for these initiatives and said that the IMF will speed up the financial support for the government of Bangladesh.

He said he has "rapidly" sent an IMF team to Bangladesh and is currently stationed in Dhaka. The team will submit its report to the IMF's Board of Directors next month.

Georgieva said the IMF could start a new lending program for Bangladesh based on the board team's report, or it could provide more loans under the existing assistance program launched early last year. Source: Bass
