Even as Helen weakened, the threat of gusts, flooding and tornadoes remained.
A family told the BBC they had to swim to safety after their house was swept away.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that some parts of the Florida coast experienced surges of up to 15 feet (4.5 meters). Tide levels will recede by this week, but the threat of landslides, strong winds and flooding remains. Up to 50 cm of rain is possible at some places.
