Pakistan's Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjan said that the attack may have been carried out using a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED).

According to a BBC report, the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the BLA said a high-level group of Chinese engineers and investors from Karachi airport were targeted. In recent years, the group has attacked Chinese nationals working on power projects in the country.

The Chinese embassy said the blast targeted the vehicle of Chinese engineers working on a power project in Sindh province.

The explosion occurred after an oil tanker collided with a car, Pakistani media outlet Dawn quoted local authorities as saying. The sound of the explosion was also heard from other nearby towns. Television footage showed black smoke billowing from the blast area and flames. It is not yet certain whether it was an explosion or an accident.

Police said - a massive explosion occurred at a traffic signal near the airport. The attack targeted an oil tanker. There were several other vehicles at the scene. After the incident, law enforcement agencies and firefighters reached the spot.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (East) Captain (retd) Azfar Mahesar said seven vehicles were burnt in the blast. Without a forensic report, it is not possible to know the cause of the explosion. It is not yet known whether it was the work of terrorists or an accident.

According to the Chinese embassy, those engineers are involved with the Chinese-funded Port Qasim Power Generation Company Limited. The company is building two coal-fired power plants at Port Qasim near Karachi. The power project is a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. A number of projects are being invested in the infrastructure and power sectors in the natural resource-rich Balochistan province to create an economic corridor.
