Death toll rises to 6 in Sherpur flood, 1.5 lakh people suffer

The deceased are Khalilur Rahman (65) of Nalitabari Khalishakudi, Idris Ali (66) of Andharupara, two brothers Alam (17) and Hatim (30) of Kutubakura village in Nishchintpur, Omeja Bewa of Baghber Balurchar. Besides, the body of an unidentified person was recovered from Sandhakura in Jhenaigati.

Nalitabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Chanwar Hossain confirmed the news of these deaths.

According to local sources, more than one and a half hundred villages have been flooded in 22 unions of Nalitabari, Jhenaigati, Nakla, Sribadardi and Sherpur Sadar in Sherpur due to the hill slopes coming down from the upstream.


Meanwhile, the flood situation in Nalitabari upazila is deteriorating. Several areas are submerged in water. Important roads in the area and large areas of cropland were submerged in water. Landslides have destroyed many homes and caused extensive damage to crops and livestock.

Most in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas there has been extensive crop damage. Thousands of people are still trapped in these areas. Army, police, fire service, volunteers in local organizations are working in their rescue operation. However, due to the strong current of water and lack of sufficient boats, the rescue work is being hampered, they said.

Nalitabari upazila executive officer Masud Rana said that many villages have been flooded in the last few days due to the breach of Bhogai and Chellakhali river dams. A separate control room has been opened for conducting relief activities in these areas.

According to information provided by the Sherpur Water Development Board, water is flowing above 1 cm at Nakugaon point, 48 cm at Nalitabari point and 247 cm at Chellakhali in Bhogai river in the district. The water of two other mountain rivers Maharshi and Someshwari is still equal to Vipatseema. Besides, the water of Brahmaputra, Mirgi and Dashani rivers has increased.

Regarding the flood situation, Executive Engineer of Sherpur Water Development Board Nakibuzzaman Khan said that the water in all the rivers will decrease by Monday and the flood situation will improve.
