Israel's military said it was investigating the incident. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement that its office and adjacent areas had been hit repeatedly.

The Israeli military also opened fire on a nearby bunker where the peacekeepers had taken shelter, they said. As a result of this shelling, several vehicles and communication systems were damaged. They also said Israeli drones were seen flying at the entrance to the bunker.

UNIFIL was formed to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon after Israel attacked Hezbollah in 1978. UNIFIL has more than 10,000 peacekeepers from different countries around the world. After the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, the UN expanded its mission and allowed peacekeepers to patrol a 'buffer zone' created along the border.

Israel accuses Hezbollah of building infrastructure along the border in violation of a UN Security Council resolution to end the 2006 war. They warned people to evacuate dozens of towns in southern Lebanon, several of which lie outside the buffer zone. UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said last week that UN peacekeepers would remain deployed along Lebanon's southern border.

UNIFIL's decision comes despite Israel's request to evacuate some areas ahead of ground operations against Hezbollah. Hezbollah, supported by Hamas and the Palestinians, started firing rockets into Israel on October 8, 2023. Israel also responded with airstrikes.

The conflict escalated rapidly and eventually the fight became all-out in the last few weeks. Israel is launching massive strikes and ground operations across Lebanon.

Hezbollah has increased its rocket fire into more populated areas further inside Israel. Although the damage is less, people's daily life is being disrupted.
